American pop star singer, songwriter and actress Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson was born on October 25, 1984 in Santa Barbara, California. Her parents Keith and Mary Hudson, raised her. Both her parents are pastor and she has an older sister and a younger brother. Her mother has an aunt and uncle that were screenwriter, Eleanor Perry and director Frank Perry.
During her childhood, Perry used to sing in her parent’s ministry. She grew up listening to gospel music and was not allowed to listen to other music. Perry also attended Christian camps and Christian schools. She also learned Lindy Hop, jitterbug and swing by seasoned dancers.
Perry studied at Dos Pueblos High School, however, she left school because she wanted to pursue her passion for music. At the age of nine to sixteen, she took vocal coaching. She later enrolled in the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara where she studied Italian opera for a short period.
Perry’s singing in church attracted rock veterans from Tennessee, soon they taught Perry to write songs. Perry then started recording demos and was taught country music by the veterans. Young Katy soon signed to Red Hill, a Christian music label. Named as Katy Hudson, she released her first self-titled Gospel rock album in 2001. However, the album was unsuccessful and the record label ceased operation in 2001. She also changed her surname to Perry since then.
She moved to Los Angeles and worked with Glen Ballard. She worked an album for the record label Island. Soon Ballard helped Perry to develop her songwriting abilities. Some of their collaborations include “Box”, “Diamond” and “Long Shot”. Simple, this was the soundtrack of the 2005 film, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
Soon she signed to Columbia Records, however, the company dropped her off the label even if she has already reached 80 percent completeness of the album. While waiting for another record label, she worked in an independent A&R company called Taxi Music.
Angelica Cob-Baeheler recommended Perry to Virgin Records chairman Jason Flom. Soon Perry signed in to the newly created Capitol Music Group, a merger between the Virgin and Capitol. As a part of their deal, the label secured to finish the unfinished album. The label soon set up collaboration between Perry and the writer-producer Dr. Luke. They produced the songs “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot n Cold”. The label also started a campaign to catch the media’s attention. On November, they released the video to “Ur So Gay” to introduce her to the market. This created press story and brought Perry to the attention of Madonna.
Her second studio album, Teenage Dreas was released in August 2010. It debuted number one on the Billboard 200. Singles such as California Gurls, teenage Dream, Firework, E.T. and Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F) were all a big hit.

Perry was credited as a guest judge of British television show, The X-Factor and released her fragrance line, “Purr”. She married Russell Brand on October 23, 2010.
